“The West wants in”

The original slogan of the Reform Party from its birth in 1987 through to its breakthrough in the 1993 federal election.

The slogan cleverly played on long-simmering feelings of Western alienation, and gave it a positive twist – implying not just that Western Canada wanted to get its due, but that it wanted to play an active role nationally. This was typical of the deliberately idealistic appeals of the Reform Party’s original leader, Preston Manning (in contrast to his 1997 “No More Prime Ministers from Quebec” slogan).
