Campaign slogan used by Pierre Trudeau’s Liberals in their (near) disastrous 1972 re-election campaign. The high-falutin’, faintly smug slogan captured what any Canadians saw was the self-satisfaction and aloofness of the Trudeau Government by 1972. The Liberals squeezed a two-seat plurality over Robert Stanfield’s Progressive Conservatives – a huge reversal from the Trudeaumania of just four years earlier.
“The Land Is Strong” is now evoked by the political cognoscenti when front-runners squander their leads through pompous and disconnected campaigns.
If you know of other campaign slogans that totally bombed, let us know.
