Prorogation

In power and need a reset? There’s always Prorogation, an arcane political manoeuvre that permits the sitting government – only if it gets permission by the Governor General – to end a session of Parliament and launch a new one with a new agenda. The Throne Speech helps kick off this new session. And if the government is lucky, proroguing will help get them beyond the last scandal and provide a fresh start.

Prorogation is always controversial. Stephen Harper did it twice, and Justin Trudeau promised he never would but did it anyway. “Just Watch Me”, Trudeau senior famously said years ago. In the early fall of 2020, Trudeau fils is doing something similar with the opposition by proroguing and then setting up a Confidence Vote.
