“Team Canada”

Phrase appropriated by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien from the 1977 World Junior Ice Hockey Champions – “Team Canada” – this is a patriotic moniker to describe international trade missions comprising federal and provincial representatives and business leaders. The first Team Canada mission, led by Chretien, went to China in 1994.

The meaning of “Team Canada” morphed over the years. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used it in his first term (2105-2019) to describe Canada’s approach to re-negotiating NAFTA. The phrase and its essence were also evident in the discussion around the COVID-19 pandemic. Canadian politicians spoke of the need to take a “Team Canada” effort to fight the outbreaks, a mission which, in this case, included all Canadians.
